Motorcycle History

Motorcycl­es were an adaptation of the "safety bike", a bicycle that offered features such as stability, braking and ease of mounting. The basic attributes of a “safety bike” were equal sized spoked wheels, roughly 30” in diameter, a chain driven rear wheel, a low center of gravity and direct front steering capabilities.

The first bike with these features to gain retail popularity was designed by John K. Starly in 1885 and was named the Rover Safety. Once Kemp’s Rover Safety design began to dominate the market, safety bicycles became known as simply, bicycles.

It didn't take long for Gottleib Daimler to successfully adapt the more user-friendly safety bicycle design into the first motorcycle by adding an internal combustion engine to the frame, also in 1885. Daimler's motorcycle had a single-cylinder engine, mounted vertically in the center of the motorcycles frame. The frame contained one front wheel, one rear wheel and a spring loaded, outrigger wheel on either side for added stability. This new version was known as a “boneshaker” because the wooden frame and wooden spoked wheels with iron rims, provided for a rather uncomfortable and strident ride.

Alex Millet was the next to improve upon the adapted safety bike design in 1892. He used the aforementioned design and incorporated pneumatic tires and a 5-cylinder rotary engine that he built into the rear wheel. This created a motorcycle where the cylinders rotated with the wheel and the crankshaft formed the rear axle.

The first successful, two-wheel motorcycle design was brought to us in 1894 by Hildebrand & Wolfmueller, patented in Munich. Their design had a water-cooled, parallel twin-engine, a water tank and a radiator. They incorporated these features by building the coolant system in the top of the rear fender of the motorcycle.

The next step in motorcycle evolution was presented in 1895, by DeDion-Buton who introduced an engine that would change motorcycle manufacturing by allowing for mass production. DeDion-Buton’s engine was a small, light weight, four-stroke engine that generated ½ a horsepower. Although DeDion-Buton developed this engine for use its motor-tricycles, it wasn’t long before motorcycle manufacturers around the globe copied and used the design.

American motorcycle manufactures were amongst those to use the DeDion-Buton engine. The most famous American motorcycle manufacturer to use the DeDion-Buton engine was the Hendee Manufacturing Company. Carl Hedstrom and George M. Hendee founded the Hendee Manufacturing Company in 1900 with the aspiration of producing a "motor-driven bicycle for the everyday use of the general public." And in 1901 they rolled out the Single, a 1.75-horsepower motorcycle that had top speed of 25 miles per hour, at this time they also decided to roll out a brand-new trade name for their motorcycles. That name was Indian, and it was the world's best-selling motorcycle until World War I.

The Harley-Davidson Motor Company, founded by William S. Harley and Arthur Davidson in 1902, went on to produce the most influential motorcycles of the industry. Its first models used the basic DeDion-Buton design and borrowed heavily from chassis designs already in use by Indian, Excelsior and Pope motorcycle manufacturers. The Harley-Davidson eventually made its name by producing its sturdy, strong and durable machines we know and love to today. In 1908, Walter Davidson, Arthur’s brother, riding what came to be known as the Silent Gray Fellow, scored a perfect 1,000 points at the 7th Annual Federation of American Motorcyclists Endurance and Reliability Contest. Soon after Walter Davidson also set the record for fuel economy at the same FAM contest by registering 188 miles per gallon. And the rest is history, by 1920 Harley-Davidson Motorcycle gained its position as the largest motorcycle manufacturer in the world.
