The Unique And The Classy = The Classic by Rakesh Gaikwad
If you go back even just 100 years, you'll find one thing in common between then and now - a love of motorbikes. New technology and designs are among the changes that have been introduced into motorbikes over the years. From the cruiser to the racing category, from high end to low end, motorbikes have always been evolving. Motorbikes are always known for their style, statement and power - and this is what attracts many people. Even many of the movie stars like Richard Gere, Clint Easwood and Marlin Brando used to ride a few of the classic motorbikes in many of their old movies. It begs the question - did the bike make the movie famous, or was it the other way 'round?
Even the classic bikes that were used back in the 1950's and 60's had lot of power, and a few were capable of reaching speeds of 300 km per hour. All the classic motorbikes display the work of brilliance and mechanical expertise that is hard to develop even today. One of the classic motorbikes that did set roads on fire was the Harley Davidson XL from the Sportster model family, which was launched back in 1950. This model was from the racing family, and was equipped with V-twin 55-cubic-inch engine. But the shape of the motorbike was kept quite similar to the KH series model. In addition to the single, it was also available in the two-tone colours.
The Britten V-1000 is one of the rarest of the classic motorbikes, as only 10 of them were manufactured. Till date it is known for its powerfully blistering 165 hp, which was V-twin powered. The major attractions of the motorbike were the grider style forks, and aluminium alloy engine with carbon fibre components. The next in the league is the Triumph TR5 trophy by James Dean, which was launched in 1955. The bike had a very basic design and was the favourite of every college-going boy. There were a few modifications introduced to the bike, such as straight pipes, and upright handlebars.
Munro's Special by Burt Munro from New Zealand experimented with Indian Scout and made the customised motorbike with a 600 cc V-twin engine. It was capable of reaching speeds of 200 miles per hour. He went on to make a record at Bonneville by reaching a speed of 190.5 miles per hour, which is the highest speed reached by an Indian Scout. He went to break his own record at Bonneville many times over.
Hogslayer by TC Christensen's is one of the fastest bikes in the world, and is kept at the British Motorcycle Museum. After going through so many changes, it went on to be the first motorbike to reach the speed of 180 miles per hour in just a quarter mile. To reach this, it only took about 8.95 seconds and in 1972 also set the top fuel record. Other Classic Motorbikes include Indian Chief Chopper by Steve Mcqueen in 1947, Honda's CB 77 Superhawk, and Captain America.
