Five Young Hurlers Take the Spotlight on Satellite TV by Jon Jacobson
For baseball fans, it's hard to choose what type of game to like more. On the one hand, a 15-12 slugfest could provide enough thrills to last a whole week. Like a heavyweight title fight, no one gives in until the end. Then again, a 1-0 double-complete game shutout has 'classic' written all over it. Pitcher's duels bring the drama in a slightly different way. To that end, here is a look at five of the most exciting young pitchers in baseball, all appearing nightly on satellite TV networks.
1. David Price, Tampa Bay. Price made a name for himself in 2008, when his relief appearance in the ALCS ended the season for the Red Sox and sent the fledgling Rays to the World Series. Since then, Tampa has had to regroup a bit, but in 2010 you can find Price back in the rotation full-time, with already a complete game shutout under his belt. Can this nasty lefty make it work for the while season? All Rays fans and AL East observers can keep track on the Sun Sport HD network.
2. Ubaldo Jimenez, Colorado. Speaking of breaking out in 2010, Jimenez has already validated his brilliant 20009 campaign with 2010's first no-hitter. The ace of Colorado's staff has plenty of pitches in his arsenal, including one of the major's best 'out' pitches. He's started out 4-0, making observers around the baseball world curious if this could be the year the Freak gets boxed out of the Cy Young award.
3. Tim Lincecum, San Francisco. Lincecum doesn't seem to be perturbed by Jimenez or new league-mate Roy Halladay, as his 4-0 start has come rather effortlessly to the young gun. It may be discouraging to opponents that by the time went through the first three weeks of the 2010 season, he had more RBI as a hitter (3) than runs allowed as a pitcher (2). Lincecum 3, National League 2. Is there any doubt as to why this young man is known as 'the Freak'? Watch him toast hitters on the Comcast Bay Area HD network.
4. Dallas Braden, Oakland. In between jawing at A-Rod for jogging across the mound and sneering at publicity photos, Braden is mowing down AL lineups with excellent poise and command. Outdueling C.C. Sabathia is something most pitchers can't brag about doing, but Braden has already done that and more in 2010. Watch him go on the Comcast California network in high definition.
5. Phil Hughes, NY Yankees. The most famous team in sports has been known for selling their young talent and bringing in an established, grizzled professional ready to play in the World Series today. While the Austin Jackson for Curtis Granderson trade was more of the same for the Yankees, they have continued to protect Joba Chamberlain and Phil Hughes. Hughes has already rewarded the team in his 2nd start with a near no-hitter - for the second time in his brief career. He is certainly worthy of protection.
