BMW dealer in NJ anticipates potential 2011 5 Series Touring model by Seth Evans
Over the past couple of years, BMW has produced the New Jersey BMW 5 Series in the Sedan and Gran Turismo versions. After much anticipation, BMW has finally produced the 5 Series in the wagon form, which is the traditional touring model. The 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring will be unveiled to the European market April 9th at the 2010 Auto Mobil International show that is held at the Leipzig plant in Germany, this is the first time that the BMW 5 series Touring will be presented to the public.
The German market currently is the most significant sales region for the Touring version of the BMW 5 Series, so it makes sense that this is where the 5 Series Wagon will make its debut. Also, the significance of the world premiere of the new BMW 5 Series Touring shows the strength of the 2010 AMI as a premier car show this year and shows the close connection of BMW to the location in Leipzig, which builds BMW’s highly successful 1 Series, and the BMW X1.
Over the past couple of weeks, BMW has started to release some of the details for the 5 Series Touring and it is said to be almost identical to the 5 Series Sedan. This means that the Touring will have lots of space, good handling, and plenty of style inside and out. Features that set the Touring apart are new engine options, gearboxes, suspension architecture, rear-wheel steering, user-selectable adaptive drive settings, brake energy regeneration and another generation of iDrive. BMW said that the 5 Series Touring will have fairly spacious rear seats, and doors that are larger than previous models. BMW has also said that they are working on equipping the Touring with Progressive Activity Sedan (PAS) which takes the tall-roof idea to the extreme. This model is also said to have a longer wheelbase and a wider track than the current generation E60 5 Series. The 5 Series Touring model is said to be considerable lower and sleeker than the 5 Gran Turismo version. The interior of the Touring features a more driver orientated centre console and a classic instrument cluster with four circular instruments.
Powertrain options for the 5 Series Touring include a top-of-the-range twin turbocharged 4.4 liter V-8 which produces 407 hp and 442 lb-ft of torque, a single turbo 3.0 liter inline six that produces 300 hp, and 300 lb-ft of torque, and a range of turbo diesel mills that consist of four- and six-cylinder units. Drivers will have the option to choose from either a six-speed manual transmission or a new eight-speed automatic. A big difference between local New Jersey BMW 5 Series models and the Touring is that the Touring won’t be offered in the M5 trim.
After making its debut at the 2010 Auto Mobil International show, the 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring F11 will go on sale in Europe by the middle of the year. There is no word yet if the Touring will be available eventually in the U.S. More details about the 2011 BMW 5 Series Touring are expected to be announced later this month.
