4 Crucial Pre-Riding Safety Tips For Motorcyclists by Jenny Carson
As children, we often had the notion that "safe" does not mean "fun." We felt that we could not do this or that, because it would be too enjoyable. However, as adults, we learn that it is possible to have a ball, while staying out of harms way. Likewise, motorcycle riding can be a blast, cruising down a country road or city interstate highway. However, we should take certain precautions to ensure that our bodies remain safe and sound. Here are some tips for motorcycle safety, before you even roll out:
1. Prepare yourself physically
In terms of motorcycle safety, we often focus on what precautions to take while cruising down a road. However, we should ensure that we are physically ready to ride our machines, beforehand. For instance, perhaps you are exhausted, recovering from the flu, or have just taken some super-duper strong medication. If so, then give your body sufficient time to recover.
2. Prepare yourself mentally
You should also be mentally prepared to hit the road. In other words, be 100% focused whenever you operate your motorcycle. If you have just received some devastating news regarding your personal or professional life, then you should wait to go cruising. Furthermore, if you have just experienced an emotional upheaval, including arguments with coworkers, customers, or even family members, take a time-out before cruising. When motorcycling, you need to make quick decisions and have cat-like reflexes while on your bike.
3. Get your gear in gear
Make sure to gear up before you hit the road:
Wear a helmet that meets the standards of your state Department of Transportation. It is important that the helmet fits snugly, but not too tightly. Also, consider eyewear such as goggles or a face-shield.
Next, wearing a motorcycle jacket and riding pants are advisable. These items will help to safeguard your body, if you were to contact the ground.
Next, full-fingered gloves can be quite functional. In frigid temperatures, they will help you to grip the controls on your motorcycle
Finally, always wear a pair of quality motorcycle boots. Various boots are available, such as Harley Davidson boots. When choosing boots, you should first consider leather and ones that cover your ankles. Also, verify that the boots fit comfortably.
4. Ensure that your motorcycle is ready to roll
In addition to preparing yourself, make sure that your machine is ready as well. Before every ride, you can do some basic checks to ensure that your motorcycle is prepared.
