In truth, there are many people out there shopping for cowboy boots without really knowing what quality and fit characteristics they should be looking for. The majority of these people are not aware of all the different factors that go into the making of western wear boots or all the different varieties that are now available. Of course, these people tend to be fashion oriented and not necessarily concerned about the functionality of the boots. Those who purchase boots to work in, to ride in, or to be outside on the range, tend to know a little bit better what they are looking for- normally related to their lifestyle needs. Regardless of whether or not you spend much of your time on a horse, or live in an area where western apparel is the norm, it is in your best interest to make sure that you buy a pair of boots that fit well and will last for many years to come. The basic characteristics of cowboy boots are a sturdy high shaft on a boot with a pointed toe and a stacked heel. While there are a few western boots that do lace up, and they are the exception to the rule because the majority of cowboy boots come with pull-tabs to help you slide your foot into them. This is actually a safety feature designed to allow the foot to pull free should the boot become tangled in the stirrup, allowing the rider to escape to safety if needed. Roper boots tend to be geared more for walking, with a slightly lower heel and a less pointed toe; these boots came about mostly because of the rodeo circuit.

If you plan to make your boot purchase online, or if you haven't tried on that style or brand of boots before, it is best to try them on in a retail store, before returning home to place your order. Anytime you are considering buying a pair or boots, take a good look at them to make sure that there are not any noticeable flaws, such as frayed stitching or rough patches on the leather. Cowboy boots have their stitching on the outside for comfort, which also makes it easy to inspect them and make sure that everything appears to be quality work and materials. Likewise, the leather should be smooth and uniform in texture and color, excepting any special inlays or exotic leathers, of course. Next comes the proper boot fit. When pulling a pair of cowboy boots on, you may need to use the pull straps to slide your foot in. Once on, stand up and walk around- this is a very important step. The boots should not pinch anywhere or should you feel any discomfort in the toe. If your foot is wide at the toe, you might want to look for a style that is more rounded than pointed at the tip. The instep of the boot should feel comfortable and snug- this is the part of your foot holding your boot on. Finally, pay attention to the heel as you walk. It is normal to have a small amount of slipping of the heel- maybe about half an inch- when walking in properly fitting cowboy boots.
