Getting Effective Safety Gear out of the Moped Dealer by Helen Belchester
It's quite common to observe young adults riding their 50cc mopeds sporting just the legal requirement of a basic safety helmet and no other safety gear.
I believe possibly the explanation for this is that 50cc mopeds are significantly less expensive than most other motorcycles, so the cost of good hand protection, jacket, and cushioned pants adds a large proportion to the total price of the motorcycle.
Of course, not many young adults possess that much cash to invest either, so one way or another it is the basic safety equipment that tends to be neglected.
I don't want to be a bore, but here is a list of safety equipment I consider essential when riding a new moped.
I could probably cope with a bad knee for a week or two, a broken foot, even a couple of fractured ribs. But being totally unable to use either hand has got to be one of the most debilitating injuries you can have. As well as being incredibly painful due to the number of nerve endings in your palm.
A padded jacket which features shoulder, elbow, and lower back armour is also quite essential. You will roll when you fall. You may well hit the curb, your bike may well fall on top of you. There is almost limitless possibility for kinetic or impact damage. You need to protect your arms and your spine and your chest in particular. A decent jacket need not cost more than ?50 or ?60, but maybe the difference between walking a gain, and being injured for a very long time.
If I can just take you back to your childhood, you probably have memories of the number of times you cut or grazed your knees. I don't know what it is about knees, but they always seem to be covered in cuts and bruises. They are also one of the most painful parts of your body to be injured. (Yes even more than your hands). Getting a decent pair of safety trousers, or at least knee protection is a vital consideration. I can speak from personal experience here, I broke both my kneecaps a few years ago and I can't imagine pain like it.
Some moped trousers incorporating kneepads are relatively in expensive, or, you can buy a separate kneepads that you can wear over normal trousers if you prefer. Again, you will be looking at under ?30 for decent protection.
Finally on my list of essential safety equipment is a pair of decent riding boots. Okay, these may not be the most important things, but you will be surprised the number of times that you slide after having a motorbike accident, contact with your motorbike, other vehicles or the curb are common. The bones on your ankle are again quite fragile, and can be twisted and broken. A good pair of motorcycle shoes that allow good flexibility as well as giving you protection from impact and weather is the final item on my list of "must-have" safety equipment.
It's easy to forget safety equipment when you are budgeting for a new 50cc moped. But for the sake of your future health and well-being it's definitely worth factoring in the four items I have listed above. Remember, if you are buying your scooter from a dealer, they may have discount offers at the time of sale. They may even throw some of this equipment in for free. Even if they don't offer, don't be afraid to ask. Most dealers will offer discount if they are sure of making a sale on a new moped.
Of course, it goes without saying that your helmet is the most important thing. But for a little more cash you can protect the rest of your body, and ensure that you have years of safe and pain-free moped riding ahead of you.
Happy riding.
